How to Request a Policy Reprojection/ Illustration from your Company

There are generally 2 ways to request a policy reprojection/ illustration:

  1. Call the company and request one, as outlined below, or
  2. Send a written request form in to the company (contact us and we can send you one)

Step 1:

  • Call the insurance company and ask them if your policy is "okay."  They will most likely say, "Yes, it is okay."  What that means in insurance lingo is that you have enough cash in your policy for it to last another 30-60 days.  It does not mean that your policy will last forever (till you die).
  • Note: Many people do not know that their policy is in trouble until they get a letter from their insurance company.  This letter generally states that their policy is about to lapse unless they put a relatively large sum of money into their policy to keep the policy active for a while longer, but not forever.
  • If a person is at that point it is difficult, but not impossible, to save the policy.
  • This step is simply to prove to yourself that the company may not have your best interest in mind.

Step 2:

  • Call the insurance company again and ask them to send you an illustration* or a reprojection* (same document, different name depending on the company).  Legally they need to provide you one for FREE every year if you ask.  Please ask every year!!!
  •  Note: When asking for a reprojection on your Variable Universal Life Policies (VUL), you specify the rate of return assumed on your dollars.  This should be in line with your overall risk tolerance.  Generally, I do not recommend anything above 9%.  Even better is to have them send you 3 reprojections at 5%, 7%, and 9% returns.
  • If you are requesting a reprojection for a Whole or Universal Life policy the insurance company will specify the rate of returns.

  Step 3:

  • When your receive your reprojection, at the point that there are any zeros at the end of the column(s) with the heading "Death Benefit" (or something similar) you no longer have a policy and your loved ones will not receive any money at your death!
  • NOTE:  The rates are not guaranteed.  Therefore, you could potentially have a reprojection at 9% that shows your policy being fine, but at 7% it does not.
  • You have to ask yourself if you want to bet your family's future on a 9% return, which is tied to your investment choices with in your policy.

You could stop here with your investigation and you will have done and know more than most people.

That being said, if you think that your policy is doing exactly what you expected it to, you probably aren't reading the illustration correctly or the inputs (rate of return, ie.) are not reasonable.  Again, Cash Value Life Insurance policies are one of the most complicated  financial products in the market.
